“Write happier songs!!” I’d heard it a hundred times, so I finally accepted this challenge and gave myself 10 attempts. Whichever of the 10 songs ended up the happiest, that’s what I would release. So here you have it… “Stockholm Syndrome”.

As you can guess from the title, it isn’t all that happy. However, the music tells its story with an uptempo beat you can blindly fall in love with, while the true meaning sits hidden within the lyrics. “The devil’s made a great case for my love”.

I was driving from Virginia back to my hometown in Ontario. I had been mulling over many ideas during this drive, as I usually do. But this one phrase kept coming back to me. “It’s all part of that Stockholm Syndrome”. I should’ve known where it had come from. At the time I was confused, but continued to let the melody come. Looking back I can see this entire song took shape because of my days-earlier unpacking of a toxic relationship. I had completely fallen in love with someone who clearly was taking advantage of and using me. I felt sympathy for him. My heart hurt for what he had gone through that would make him treat me so poorly, totally ignoring the poor treatment in the first place. Anyone who told me otherwise was clearly trying to ruin my bliss. I guess this song knew what had truly happened before my brain did.

Stockholm Syndrome is for anyone who has fallen in love with the wrong person. It’s for those who want to stomp and clap their way out of it. To stomp and clap until their brains realize the truth. If there is such a thing as a dark anthem, this is it. Sing along while the rock drums carry you into the swung tune. “Stockholm Syndrome.. It’s all part of that… Stockholm Syndrome.”

Endorsements/Quotes

“I’ve never heard a voice as evocative as Warner’s.” - Marshall Ward, Waterloo Chronicle

“She’s obviously a born entertainer. She has crazy stage presence. She held the whole room in the palm of her hand. She just had to sing those first few notes and she captivated everyone. She’s just super talented.” - Whitney Neilson, The Observer

“Listening to Warner’s new album this past week, I’m already hooked on her catchy melodies and the inherent vulnerability of her lyrics and voice, conveying raw feelings and emotions on songs like Worth It, Please Don’t Look at Me, and the sensual contemporary R&B track, Undress.” - Marshall Ward, Waterloo Chronicle

“The songwriting here is immensely heartfelt, and fits like a glove, conjoined with the instrumentation. This piece gave me the inspiration to view myself a bit deeper today.” - Imani Wj Wright, Swanodown
